Abstract
It is impossible to reliably predict the onset or extent of inflation, but you can use certain data as a guide and position your portfolio for the possibility. This Practical Applications report is presented in a Q&A format that mirrors the accompanying video interview with George Crawford, Managing Director of the Investment Research Foundation.
Crawford sides squarely with those who fear we may be laying the groundwork for hyper-inflation—including Eugene Fama, Ray Dalio and Bill Gross. But he stresses that even low inflation severely erodes the value of a portfolio over time.
Unfortunately, experts are not very good at predicting the onset or extent of inflation, he cautions. Crawford gives some practical advice for protecting a portfolio from the risk of inflation.
